You all know Classmates.com from all the internet ads over the last number of years.
VentureWire reported yesterday that they were bought by United Online for $100 million in cash, previously backed by $15 million in VC financing.
Pretty amazing transaction, most notably because the news focused on Classmates.com's "online community-based networking tool". There has been a lot of activity in this area over the last few months.
Posted by Jeremy Showalter at October 27, 2004 02:53 PMInteresting... there were a couple of articles in the not-so-mainstream press a month or so back trumpeting the death of the social networking trend. Of course, this is United Online we're talking about... maybe they felt it was a good deal.
I did hear a rumor about Juno planning to charge for its services soon, so maybe it was a way to get additional services to integrate with United Online's other properties. Should be interesting to see what happens.
I always find sites like Classmates.com to be valuable tools in finding email addresses for social engineering, since lots of people tend to just put their company email address in there.
